Campaign in an Evening!

Campaign in an Evening!

Hello all.

I've had one of my somewhat crazy ideas that may or may not work, but figured I'd post it out here for you lot. Rather than run one campaign that goes on for a bit and have people lose interest, we run one in an evening! Basically, the event would take over the club for a night and run the following games concurrently.

The event would take place across a beleagured system of planets (think generic 40k end of the world stuff). Each table would represent a key battle for a planet, and the campaign would take place with Imperials on one side, bad guys on the other.

We'd have a Planetstrike game at 1500 or 2000 points - representing the Imperial forces fighting off an attempted Tyranid Invasion on the outskirts of the system.

Concurrently, on a nearby planet, the Imperial forces may be under siege by a large traitor guard force through the medium of a scenario battle from the missions books.

Whilst this goes on, there may be a struggle to keep the space lanes open in the form of a BFG game if enough players are interested, and likewise we may see the full scale slaughter of a planet via Epic.

The jewel in the crown would be a 10k Apocalypse Game, Imps vs Orks (3 players or so on each side) as we get the store to bust out its stompas and the like and join with our Ork players. Maybe it we could even have just Blood Angels on the Imp side too - red vs green!

Anyway, at 10 that night we'd have a pretty good idea of whether or not the system still stands and we could write up some pretty flavour text and forever preserve it on the forum.

What do you think?

I really like the idea but

I really like the idea but am just wondering if 4 hours is enough? Reckon we can do all that in that time?

Well, every game is

Well, every game is independant so no players will be duplicated - a lot of people just need to get one game finished at a 1500 or 2k level so that should be done.

The apoc game should tick over with just three players and decent objectives - three turns each should be enough to settle it.

Perhaps we could modify victory conditions for ease of play. Ian is good at these sorts of things!

Really good idea buddy.

Really good idea buddy.

If I can make it I'll

If I can make it I'll definitely be interested, either Orks for Apocalypse or Epic (I have Marines, Orks and Chaos available).

Could probably do the other games instead too if you need me to fit in elsewhere.

Awesome stuff! We'll have to pick a day you can make!

So a series of linked

So a series of linked parallel games rather than a sequential campaign? Sounds like a neat idea, count me in.

I've always liked the idea of one game effecting another in Campaigns. An idea maybe that if one particular battle is won or lost then another battle sees reinforcements arrive during the apocalypse game or losses some points allowance for example.

we did a similar thing at

we did a similar thing at rygas, the objectives on the apoc board allowed you to control defense lasers on the epic board (if they were still operational) and then shoot ships down on the BFG board worked well. Very well for the BS 5 chaplian taking ships out like there was no tomorrow!

Well

Well, personally I don't think that this sort of campaign is particularly effective in terms of "campaign story", but I think it could be a pretty good thing to do :)

Well, certainly it lacks a 3-stage arc. However, this is 40k, not high drama. At best all such GW drama should be faintly soap-opera esque. We gamers cannot deal with complex plot points and subtext. (Example - Horus Heresy: "Nooooo! My Favourite Son!!") It's biblical in its melodrama.

Oh and the other plus point is we can get it done in a night without people getting bored or having life commitments getting in the way. Though if you want we could figure in a side story where one of the guardsmen on the frontline has a family waiting at home and this is his last battle before retirement...

Hows that for family friendly?
