I've changed the settings for image pages so that they no longer automatically get added to the front page - otherwise my gallery uploads wipe everything off the front page!
If you upload an image and want it to appear as a recent item on the front page, scroll down to the bottom of the submission page, open up the 'Publishing options' section and check 'Promoted to front page'.
