Ian,

How come new content that is added does not show on the front page? The latest content on there appears to be Rob informing everyone that there is no club night on the 16th February...

What content do you want to show there? 99% of the new content on the site is forum posts or photos.

P.S. Whenever you start a thread or add a photo page you can add it to the front page by going to 'Publishing options' and clicking on 'Promoted to front page'.

Nothing inparticular, but "latest content" that doesn't update with anything seems a little redundant.

Then I'm missing something because I don't see 'Publishing options', or a 'Promoted to front page'.

I don't know whether it is the case on this particular forum, but the way these things are normally set up as standard is that anything marked as announcements would be published to the front page.
